Mamasita: Melbourne (13 July 2012)

Simple and creative, Mamasita is a taco and tequila bar hidden up a long flight of stairs on Collins Street. Mamasita provides authentic and modern Mexican good and beverages (huge variety of tequila!), for a reasonable price. Emphasising on the idea that in Mexico meals are often shard as a family style banquet, the menu at Mamasita revolves mainly around dishes that are easily shared along with more substantial dishes that are under the heading “Comida para la familia” (food for the family).

Totopos with guacamole and salsa ($9)
A huge bowl of uber crunchy tortilla chips served with two pots of guacamole and a spicier tomato salsa. The tortilla chips are crunchier and tastier than the average ones you get in most Mexican restaurants (or the ones you DIY at home) and provided the perfect snack whilst we chatted over drinks
Mole negro con pollo ($24)
Black mole with raised right confit chicken maryland – a traditional Mexican dish that Mamasita does well by cooking the chicken slowly until the meat literally falls upon the fork touching it. The sauce is spicy and sweet, and has a slightly sticky texture that makes it easy to marinate the chicken pieces.
Overall we both had an enjoyable dinner at Mamasita, matched with friendly and proficient service. As we were leaving at around 6.30pm we noticed the line had stretched down the stairs and onto the street, so it’s probably advisable to go for an early dinner (we arrived for a 5pm seating).
